Billboard recently spoke with Cursive leader Tim Kasher about the odd billing of his band with an alt-metal tour: “I questioned it at first and was kind of intimidated,” Kasher tells Billboard.com. “Like, why would we play a metal show? But I kind of like the idea of where they’re going with it. I met one of the Mastodon members and he was pretty credible and a nice gentleman. That goes a long way for us as far as this business. I guess I based it off, the bands are credible and respectable, so I think they’re good people to associate with.”
It is a bit of a left-field pairing, but Kasher seems to welcome the challenge of trying to convert kids who are expecting an abrasive show. Not that Cursive’s back catalog is filled with meandering slow jams or anything, but the band’s most recent record, Happy Hollow, follows a more experimental musical lead, focusing mainly on its lyrical theme of hypocrisy in religion.
So, don’t expect Cursive to weigh its set down with its older, more abrasive past. The band is curious to see what happens without catering to the crowd’s need for ear-splitting volumes.
And if you miss Cursive on this tour you might not have to wait four years to see it again, as Kasher admits, “I think we’re trying to not do a hiatus this time.”
Kasher’s other band, The Good Life, has an album already in the can called Help Wanted Nights due in September, for which Kasher also wrote a screenplay. And with his recent move from his beloved Omaha to Los Angeles, one might assume he has big Hollywood plans.
