The AP has a surprisingly decent piece on jazz legend Sonny Rollins. At 76, Rollins is still recording and performing. He made his mark in the early 1950’s, recording with Miles Davis and Thelonius Monk. He broke new ground with his strict use of only bass and drums as accompaniment to his sax solos. When he recorded his masterpiece, Saxophone Colossus, in 1956, he was America’s premiere saxophonist.

“The thing that I am most proud of in my career is that fact that I was able to see beyond being popular and all that stuff … and do what my inner self told me to do … because I’m serious about music.”
