The Universal Music Group has notified Apple that it will not renew its contract to sell music through iTunes. Rather, it plans to market certain artists at will, which could allow the conglomerate to remove music currently on iTunes with little to no notice. Contract negotiations have obviously soured between the two companies, causing Universal’s drastic plans. Both sides could lose significant business if a compromise is not met, as one out of every three releases is somewhere under the Universal umbrella. Conversely, iTunes is the dominant digital download service, whose seeming monopoly is the crux of Universal’s dilemma.
