Overlooked as a single by fans and even by the band for its recent setlists, Depeche Mode’s “Shake the Disease” remains one of my favorites. Martin Gore is looking spectacularly crazy in this video, as he was wont to do in the ’80’s. Androgyny doesn’t quite cover it. Gore’s penchant for S&M gear looked straight, ahem, out of the gay biker scenes from the Police Academy movies. The fact that he balances such sincerity and seriousness while dressed as a dominatrix clown only adds to the song’s confusing sexual innuendo. Damn good hook, though.
