New Battles EP for “Tonto” single

Posted September 26th, 2007 by eric

With the pitch-shifting, futuristic melodies and the oddball techno stomp of its debut, Mirrored, Battles has pushed itself to the forefront of the experimental elite. The first single, “Atlas” showcased the band’s bag of complex wizardry with an unforeseen vocal melody over top a danceable backbeat, squawking, processed guitar jabs and rigid keyboard noodlings. The new single, “Tonto”, is less overtly flashy but still hypnotizes with its layers of off-kilter riffs. The EP features remixes of “Tonto” by The Field, Four Tet, DJ EMZ and Joell Ortiz, live versions of “Tonto” and “Leyendecker”, as well as a DVD package with videos for both “Atlas”, “Tonto”, and the making of “Tonto.”

Does it sound anything like The Sugarhill Gang’s “Tonto”? I’m guessing it don’t. Dang.
