PJ Harvey’s insanely brief tour promoting White Chalk at least allowed for one national television appearance, so the rest of us, who don’t live in L.A. or New York, could see what she’s up to. So, for her performance on Jay Leno Tuesday night, she was draped in black and played alone with an autoharp, some crazy vintage pedal box, and lots of reverb on her voice. I can’t imagine she won over too many Americans with such a morose tune, but it was no less lovely. Always pushing for new directions, Harvey is quite clearly not aiming for much radio play with White Chalk– her most insular and personal work to date. The video is truncated slightly, but it’s worth watching anyway.
