Seattle’s Sub Pop Records is taking digital distribution into its own hands with a new mp3 shop. Its current online catalog is running 200 albums deep. No individual track purchases are available yet, and the encoding is only 192kbps. But, Sub Pop is open to criticism and welcomes user feedback to help improve the store. Albums are priced at $9.90 each with a collection spanning Nirvana, Mudhoney, St. Etienne, and Six Finger Satellite through current releases from Band of Horses and Iron and Wine. Bitrates are scheduled to improve and PDF artwork packages will soon be available. It’s much easier to wade through albums from a trusted label than feeling overwhelmed at a search bar by a clusterfucky behemoth like iTunes.
