Evan Dando recently told Billboard that his resurrected version of The Lemonheads is set to release a new album next spring. Recording will begin in January, but Dando is tight-lipped about the whole thing because he’s afraid of jinxing it. He’s not back on the crack again is he? Considering the ho-hum return of The Lemonheads last year, I’m not as enthusiastic about a new record as I am about Rhino’s reissue plans for the band’s 1991 classic, It’s A Shame About Ray. The deluxe edition will be packaged with the requisite demo versions, b-sides, and a DVD of footage from that era. Ray remains Dando’s undisputed masterpiece. To this day I can’t play that record without singing along to every word. I know it’s a lot to ask, but maybe Rhino could drop the “Mrs. Robinson” cover. The song was originally added to late pressings of Ray to coincide with the 25th anniversary of The Graduate, but it’s an atrocity that almost succeeds in tarnishing one of my favorite records.

I’ve always been perplexed by how absolutely pop genius It’s a Shame About Ray was and how crap everything preceding and following was. Could Juliana’s influence have been that great?
It is definitely one of my all time faves, with or without Mrs. Robinson.
