It’s been seventeen years since The Wedding Present recorded its aggressive master work, Seamonsters, with engineer Steve Albini. The marriage of Albini’s penchant for abrasiveness with The Wedding Present’s strumming frenzy of guitars may have frightened some of the band’s early pop fans, but it cemented its underground allure. Even though The Wedding Present never had much luck with labels, which changed with almost every release, admirers like Radio 1 DJ John Peel kept the band’s name from disappearing into obscurity. The band is back in the studio with Albini at the healm, recording its eight studio album. That number seems slight for a band that’s been together the better of two decades, but that’s because The Wedding Present has released far more singles and compilations than actual albums, the most famous of which were the Hit Parade singles in 1992, wherein the band released a 7″ single every month. The new record is due out this spring.

The other reason there aren’t more twp studio albums is that between 1998 and 2003 the singer/songwriter David Gedge released three studio albums and numerous singles and live recordings under the name ‘Cinerama.’
