Crafting the follow-up to last year’s stupendous Hissing Fauna, Are You the Destroyer? isn’t intimidating in the least for Kevin Barnes, despite the fact that Fauna’s emotional bloodletting practically destroyed his sanity. Turns out not much has changed, even with all the accolades and success, as Barnes recently told Rolling Stone, “Every day, I wake up, I never know if I’m going to want to slit my wrists or go jogging. It affects the music.” You don’t say? Barnes also jokingly claims that every one of his records has a parallel Prince record, and that this new one is his “Sign ‘o’ the Times, Lovesexy and The Black Album all together.” If that’s even remotely true, then this record has a lot to live up to. Barnes has recently moved back to Athens, Georgia, where’s he’s recording Of Montreal’s 9th studio album. Alone in the studio. Just like Prince.
