My high school crush on Juliana Hatfield didn’t translate into quite what I had worked out in my head, even though she did once help a friend of mine and I sneak into a Lemonheads show (circa It’s A Shame About Ray!) when we were underage. She set us up to watch the entire show from the side of the stage and invited us backstage afterward to hang out with her and Evan Dando (and we weren’t even forced to do any crack!). And later when she wrote “LOVE JULIANA” on a balled up piece of paper I awkwardly asked her to sign, I was positive she meant it. No, no, you don’t understand, she wrote “LOVE.” After all, why wouldn’t she have been totally smitten with a 17-year-old high school kid barely able to form a sentence in her presence? The soft spot in my heart for Juliana Hatfield’s saccharine voice remains to this day, and her new video for “This Lonely Love” brings back all kinds of long-forgotten teenage nostalgia. Probably not what she’s going for, but it’s a good tune nonetheless.
