I wasn’t much of a Cold War Kids fan until I saw them at Bonnaroo in 2007, where I truly began to appreciate the insanity of Nathan Willett’s voice, which is even more powerfully possessed live than it comes across on record. It’s a polarizing instrument to be sure, almost indescribably weird. You certainly won’t mistake him for anyone else. His crazed and strained attack can be unnerving at first, especially in a song like this, where it’s full throttle 100% of the time. I can see how some people might find this grating, but the more I listen to it the more I’m enamored of it. And his narrative-style lyrics, which can straddle the fence of white-boy-soul posturing, are more often smart and self-deprecating.

I go through phases of loving CWK and alternately finding them intolerable. When I’m in the right mood, I can’t get enough of his voice. That was a nice performance.
