A bunch of the new Arctic Monkeys tunes surfacing lately have been terrible quality bootlegs, but this clip of “Crying Lightning” from the Big Day Out festival in Sydney is the first tolerable glimpse of the band’s new direction. Having holed up in the studio with Queens of the Stoneage frontman Josh Homme doesn’t seem to have had a huge impact on Alex Turner’s writing style, though he’s definitely experimenting with more complicated arrangements and a markedly slower pace. For me, the Arctic Monkeys only get better with age, but I know a chunk of the kids who swallowed up the band’s crazily hyped debut will probably balk at any deviation from the brashness of the early singles. Turner is an adventurous and freakishly observant lyricist, who seems confident in his skin and with his improving skills. [via Forward Music]
