It’s no secret that Black Francis has one of the best screams in rock, but his blood curdling, cathartic spasm on the Pixies’ classic “Tame” is untouchable. Kurt Cobain learned more than a few tricks from Mr. Francis’ guttural shrieks and put them to fine use. I was helpfully reminded of this by The Guardian’s piece today on “the power of catharsis in rock” and just had to hear “Tame” immediately. This live version from London’s Brixton Academy back in June of 1991 epitomizes Francis’ visceral prowess. I love how awkwardly he dances along to Kim Deal’s ape-simple bassline. Goddamnit, the Pixies were amazing.
