When you think of Playboy’s target demographic, do Dinosaur Jr. fans come to mind? Well, maybe. Anyway, the reunited trio sat down for a performance and chat piece for a new feature on Playboy.com. The guys discuss their unanimous love and respect for The Cure, which was already evident in their monstrous cover of The Cure’s classic “Just Like Heaven” two decades ago. J, Lou, and Murph talk up Robert Smith’s weird wardrobe and mad ping pong skills before launching into an acoustic version of the aforementioned tune. This interpretation differs wildly from both the original and Dinosaur Jr.’s own cover, as J sort of free-style solos over the intro while Lou holds the fort down with standard chord changes. Murph just seems to shake some rattles, but it all makes for a delightfully weird clip. Playboy hasn’t figured out embedding yet, so you can view it here.

thanks eric! i loved the live song, but mostly, my day has been made by picturing J Mascis and Robert Smith playing ping pong together. god why didn’t someone take a photo of that.

agreed. i’d pay to have seen that lot going at it on the ping pong table.

thought you might find it interesting that a couple years into owning the Village Tavern I got a letter from Playboy that we had been selected aas part of a new marketing campaign to put Playboy directly in front of consumers. They wanted to know if we would be willing to receive multiple copies of the magazine and place or display them in such a way that customers could see and read them. Of course we accepted and I’m pretty sure they still get them. Between all the Niko Case articles, marketing to indie rock clubs, and Dinosaur Jr vids, Playboy must consider aging indie rockers a pretty sizable part of their niche.

They never lasted more than a day. When they would arrive the happy hour crowd might pass them around then they would usually disappear before nightfall. I remember in one of the first issues we got there was a results of an online readers poll for who they wanted in a pictorial most and the landslide winner was Neko Case. I found it very bizarre that Playboy readers knew who she was much less wanted to see her naked.
