Joy Division/New Order song surfaces in Absolut ad

Posted August 5th, 2009 by eric

It’s sort of disheartening to hear one of my favorite songs of all time in a vodka ad. I’m 99% certain that this is a cover, though. It doesn’t sound like New Order’s version, and I know it’s not Joy Division’s version. So, either it’s some crazy remaster or a cover. That’s not much consolation, even if it is.

Awful. Where’s Rob Gretton when you really need him?

Broken Social Scene are covering “Love Will Tear Us Apart” for the upcoming flick The Time-Traveler’s Wife.:

Thanks AJW. That’s an odd cover to be sure. Reminds me of that poster of all the Joy Division covers.

Heck, I don’t really care if it’s used to push vodka or if it’s an odd cover. It reminded me of a great song, which I’m now going to put back on rotation.

hearing that song again by Joy Division/ New Order brought back a phenomal song into my life that I hadn’t heard in many years, that I love. It brought me back to enjoying listening to Joy Division & New Order again, watching documentaries & the film “Control” about them. I for one am eternally grateful for bringing these old songs back into my soul. Commercialism isnt what Ian Curtis may have wanted, but there’s a reason for everything… Loving the music.

what a God send! I’m ever so grateful for Joy Division/ New Order to be brought back into my heart & soul. Though Ian Curtis may not have wanted his music commercialized, because it was all about the love of his music, this IS all about the love of his music. Without it I wouldn’t have recently seen their documentary or movie “Cobtrol”, these, as was Joy Division’s music ate true gifts.

Hate it when they hi-jack ones loved songs. Bad vodka!
And it is difinitely not a JD-version.

Ceremony is a sacred song, how dare they just trash its legacy to sell bottles of fucking Vodka. All about the love of music? Don’t be so naive, if the company who produced this travesty only wanted to share a love of music, why even mention their product?. If you need advertisements to help you remember a feeling, song or period of time, you really are isolated from the real world, and probably felt little when you hear this song as done by JD, New Order or even the Radiohead version. Anything good that is created as music, art or expression, is eventually ruined, re-manufactured and commercialised by corporations with the time and money. As another poster said, so very sad.

If it had to be done, best it were done to promote alcohol rather than a Ford Taurus.

Bernard himself sold out and re-did “Blue Monday” for a Sunkist advert. Then again, the group were being paid 300 grand for it. As long as the money’s OK, I don’t think any of them are complaining.

Defintely not the New Order or Joy Division versions of Ceremony – obviously a bit of an instrumental they got some bland band-for-hire to do for the ad.

I don’t blame Barney for redoing “Blue Monday” for a Sunkist advert so New Order could get 300 grand. After reading Hooky’s book about the Hacienda and the amount of money they tipped into that, that’s a group that certainly deserved a few big paydays.
