So, The Sonic Youths were on Gossip Girl last night. It was so weird and uncomfortable. Worlds colliding and all that. And Kim Gordon officiated Rufus and Lily’s wedding? It made me cringe in places I don’t even understand. And an acoustic version of “Star Power” is not what the doctor ordered. I know Kim Gordon isn’t the best singer in the world but Jesus Lord. Videogum has an in-depth recap. I laughed out loud too many times to count. Don’t forget to read the comments. Oh, and if you don’t watch Gossip Girl, then the recap might look to you something like this: 01011000111010000011110101010110010101.

GG has definitely jumped the shark. Last night’s show was just bad bad bad. Kim was clearly uncomfortable and it was really uncomfortable to watch. WTF were they thinking? Ugh is right.

Amusingly, while watching Monday’s episode I was debating whether I preferred Kiki or Lily. I sided with Kiki. I miss Seth, too.

Fascinating blog–is it all about the commodification of punk/prog-rock/emo/indie/goth/etc? Just a mini-critique: I’m sorry but you’ve humiliated yourself by calling Sonic Youth “The Sonic Youths.” I will now humiliate myself by saying that I am addicted to Gossip Girl, and that I worship Sonic Youth and have since I first encountered them in middle school, 20-some years ago (not said for cred but to celebrate their staying power). Re: Gossip Girl, the whole BS narrative of Rufus and Lily, and how often the writers get things *almost right* in their references to 90s indie music is just so wrong. When Dan said something about “math rock” I almost sh*t myself! I love it, it’s like watching a train wreck. I keep wondering if anyone’s writing any critical theory about all this stuff–Hot Topic, Urban Outfitters, and now Burberry et al–let’s sell punk! If you know of any scholarly works on this stuff, please let me know. xoxo

SJM, you clearly didn’t watch the show or you would be aware that in this particular episode Dorota calls them, “the Sonic Youths.” Poser.
