STREAM: New Battles “Titanium 2 Step”

Having shrunk to a duo within the last year, NYC experimentalists Battles have just released “Titanium 2 Step,” the lead single for the forthcoming long-player Juice B Crypts due out in October via Warp. It’s a frenetic space jam of chaotic funk with Liquid Liquid’s Sal Principato lending sporadic vocal yelps. The band is currently on tour in Europe, hitting the US in early December.

VIDEO: Battles “My Machines” [featuring Gary Numan]

Battles’ second LP, Gloss Drop, somehow seems to be achieving underrated status when it’s easily one of the best records of the year. Hammering that point home is the band’s new single “My Machines,” which features the one and only Gary Numan on vocals. This is an album highlight for me, as it’s one of the album’s more aggressive musical tangents, and I love Numan’s unorthodox vocal line. The video wins just for placing Gary Numan in the mundane context of a shopping mall, replete with shopping bag.

Battles Preparing Gloss Drop for June

Battles has paired down to a three-piece, but the departure of multi-instrumentalist/vocalist Tyondai Braxton hasn’t quashed my excitement for the new record, Gloss Drop, one bit. (That album title, by the way, is the win). In fact, as long as Ian Williams is on board, I’m on board. The new record is out June 7th via Warp and is to be followed by an extensive multi-continent tour spanning several months. If you fancy having your mind blown, try these guys live. Later this year the band will help curate ATP‘s Nightmare Before Christmas with Caribou and Les Savy Fav. [via Pitchfork]

STREAM: Tyondai Braxton “Platinum Rows”

With an impressive pedigree from both his band and his lineage, it’s unsurprising that Tyondai Braxton would score for a large ensemble consisting of everything from kazoos, piccolo, harp, clarinet, double bass, trumpet, xylophone and glock, just to name a few. Braxton’s debut solo album, Central Market, will be out September 15, 2009 via Warp, which will feature this wildly ambitious piece, “Platinum Rows”, which was recorded live with the Wordless Music Orchestra of New York. Pre-orders for the limited vinyl release can be found here. [via Stereogum]
