Marilyn Manson has never been accused of writing a good song; the man isn’t exactly famous for his tunes. But at least a few singles here and there over the years have had, you know, choruses and whatnot that were almost passably memorable. No such luck with his latest single, “Heart Shaped Glasses”, though. When I first heard it, I honestly thought it was someone mocking him. It’s a tuneless mess with 57 unintelligible vocal overdubs, and the lyrics are exponentially beyond atrocious. I’ve seen Manson interviewed a number of times. He seems like a bright enough guy underneath all the corny goth sock-puppet schtick, which makes me wonder what drugs he could have possibly ingested that would dull his senses to a point where this clunky couplet sounded like a good idea: “I don’t mind you keeping me on pins and needles/If I could stick to you, and stick me too.” I guess the tactic is to repeat it enough times so that it might stick in someone’s head. But that turd is dead on arrival. Astoundingly bad.
