The mighty Grifters captured in an undated show playing a blistering version of “Holmes” off its second record, Crappin’ You Negative, released on its own Shangri-La Records. This Memphis band played a noisy brand of deconstructed blues-rock that got mistaken for indie rock in the mid-90’s because of its lo-fi production values (or extreme lack thereof). Both One Sock Missing and the aforementioned Crappin’ You Negative are essential listening, if you like messy, contradictory music where chaotic muffled noise gives way to expansive, lasting melodies encased in layers of distortion and guitar fuzz. So highly recommended.
