Tricky is still around? Trip hop certainly died an ugly death by the turn of the century, and no one represents the downfall better than former Massive Attack contributor, Tricky, whose gravelly rapping style landed him a record deal with 4th & Broadway in 1994. Peaking creatively on your debut is never a good thing, but that’s exactly what Tricky did, as the slow-burn grooves and haunting melodies of Maxiquaye were never again matched. And by the time Blowback was released in 2001, Tricky was teaming up with shit-stompers like Ed Kowalczyk from Live. Game over. Well, almost. Tricky is back in the news again with a new record label, Brown Punk, that he started with Island Executive Chris Blackwell. The first release is by The Gospel featuring Kira, which is out September 10.
