Rilo Kiley is a band from which I never thought I’d be anticipating new music. Its first two records sounded trapped in middling indie rock with a country tinge. Ironically, it wasn’t until its major label debut, More Adventurous, that made me pay closer attention, particularly the single “Portions for Foxes.” Jenny Lewis became a much more confident and commanding presence, vocally. And her solo debut, Rabbit Fur Coat, only cemented her newfound poise and lyrical daring. The band’s new single, “The Moneymaker”, plays upon Lewis’ overt sexuality, which had been merely a coy tease up until now. So, if you can’t wait until Tuesday for the hard copy of Under the Blacklight, it’s streaming in full on Myspace.
