No, this isn’t exactly new, but it’s become kind of an obsession lately. Jason Schwartzman’s “band” has a decent record led by this single, “West Coast”, which seems innocuous enough in its claustrophobic lo-fi indie pop charm until it seeps into your head and refuses to leave. You’ll be humming that piano riff all day long. The album features a few of the requisite celebrity cameos you’d expect from another celebrity of Schwartzman’s caliber and cool, as Kirsten Dunst and Zooey Deschannel lend some fairly low-key background vocals to a few songs. I’m not advocating actors turning into musicians or anything, but exceptions can always seep through and Coconut Records’ Nighttiming is certainly one that breaks the mold.

I’ve been totally obsessed with this song for months. It really gets into your head. I’m also pretty much a sucker for Zooey, as well. These are good crossovers as far as I’m concerned.

I also loved Mark Gonzales as a kid. I still have my Gonzales deck.
