So, I downloaded TuneUp after reading this BoingBoing bit. It’s a versatile iTunes ad-in (currently only available for Windows with Mac support on the way) that cleans up your ID3 tags and finds missing album art, among other web-referencing listening functions. I’m pretty anal about my music collection in all formats, so screwed up tags nag at more than a few of my not-so-latent neuroses. Most people’s digital collections are a messy morass of shared files, ripped files, and generally asstarded tagging. TuneUp works by taking an “audio fingerprint” of the songs in your collection and compares them to Gracenote’s global media database. If you have a large digital collection, it can be a slightly onerous task at first. To process and clean about 100 gigs of music can eat up the bulk of your day, but the success rate is pretty high (85% – 90%). And once you get that initial clean-up out of the way, TuneUp can easily keep you organized. I was impressed to discover that even weird, off-kilter bands like Melt Banana or Born Against can be cleaned and matched with ease. Obviously, the more obscure an artist, the less likely TuneUp will be able to work its magic. So, if you have a lot of bootlegs or local artists, you may be out of luck with those tags. TuneUp gives you 500 cleans for free, plus 50 album covers. After that the pricing tier seems pretty fair: $11 for a year or $19 for lifetime. I had no idea I was missing so much album art, so for that aspect alone it’s been completely worth it.
