VIDEO: Blur “Under the Westway”

With a live streaming Twitter premier this past Monday, Blur unveiled two newly recorded songs, which will be featured on a limited 7″ single due out in August. Both tracks are available now on iTunes. The songs are set to promote the band’s appearance at the closing ceremony for the Olympic games on August 12. Prior to that Blur will embark on a low-key UK tour to warm up for the grandiosity of an Olympic themed-event. Also, not without coincidence, the band will release a career-spanning box set on July 30, entitled 21, which, according to NME, will include “the band’s seven studio albums as well as over five hours of previously unreleased material including 65 tracks, rarities, three DVDs, a collector’s edition book and special limited edition Seymour seven-inch vinyl.” A vinyl version of the set will also be available.

The video for “Under the Westway” is a simple, straightforward in-studio shoot of the band recording, focused and grim-faced. New album rumors are once again swirling.

STREAM: Fiona Apple “Every Single Night”

With her first note of new music in seven years, Fiona Apple is readying both a tour and the release of her long awaited fourth long player ridiculously titled The Idler Wheel Is Wiser Than the Driver of the Screw and Whipping Cords Will Serve You More Than Ropes Will Ever Do. But you know what? When that girl is mad, her titles get crazy. And when her titles get crazy, the music gets venomous. This first taste isn’t Apple in attack mode, but the controlled restraint is certainly tense. I remember seeing her on that short-lived IFC show “Icons,” where she was paired up with Quentin Tarantino. They interviewed each other, which was weird enough, but Apple said that she only makes records when she has something to say. More artists should follow her lead instead of the record company-induced promotional cycle. Either way, looking forward to the new record. [via Spin]

Video Surfaces from Reunited Refused’s Secret Show

Recently reunited hardcore outfit Refused played a secret show last night in its home town of UmeƄ, Sweden. The band is gearing up for a high profile appearance at Coachella this spring as well as a smattering of US dates. Evidence that the band can still kill it live follows. [via Punk News]

VIDEO: Santigold “Disparate Youth”

Can’t get enough of this song. My favorite single of the year thus far. Love the dubbed out reggae bass line as well as Santigold’s detached vocal. Genius. Her new record Master of My Make-Believe is due out May 1, 2012 via Downtown/Atlantic. [via Stereogum]

RIP Davy Jones

Davy Jones, the lead singer of The Monkees died today of a heart attack in Florida. He was 66.

I was 12 when MTV ran insane marathons of reruns of The Monkees’ TV show, which I watched obsessively. No matter who actually played which instruments on the albums, the Head soundtrack is classic.

STREAM: Rocket Juice And The Moon “Hey Shooter (feat. Erykah Badu)”

Not sure how I missed this yesterday over at Stereogum, but the very bizarre “supergroup” comprised of Damon Albarn, Flea, and Tony Allen released the first taste of what its forthcoming full-length might sound like. And, contrary to what that absurd moniker might lead you to believe, it is not terrible. Not terrible at all. The first single features Erykah Badu on vocals, and it’s a spaced-out-funk-jam held together by Flea’s (surprisingly) inoffensive slap bass groove. Either my man-crush on Damon Albarn runs slightly deeper than I had heretofore been aware, or this is quite possibly good.

The group’s proper self-titled album is out March 27, 2012 via Albarn’s Honest Jons label.
